Poem: Review the poems learned so far. Memorize the third and fourth stanzas of this poem:

My Shadow
I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

Poem: Review the poems we have learned so far. Finish learning "The Wreckers." Who are the builders in your life? How do they build others? What can you do to be a builder?

The Wreckers

Carmelo Benvenga

I watched them tearing a building down,

A gang of men in a busy town.

With a ho-heave-ho and lusty yell,

They swung a beam and a sidewall fell.

I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled,

As the men you’d hire if you had to build?”

He gave me a laugh and said, “No indeed!

Just common labor is all I need.

I can easily wreck in a day or two

What builders have taken a year to do.”

And I thought to myself as I went my way,

Which of these two roles have I tried to play?

Am I a builder who works with care,

Measuring life by the rule and square?

Am I shaping my deeds by a well-made plan,

Patiently doing the best I can?

Or am I a wrecker who walks the town,

Content with the labor of tearing down?

Land of the noble free,

Poem: memorize this poem:

It Can Be Done

The man who misses all the fun
Is he who says, "It can't be done."
In solemn pride he stands aloof
And greets each venture with reproof.
Had he the power, he'd efface
The history of the human race;
We'd have no radio or motor cars,
No streets lit by electric stars;
No telegraph or telephone,
We'd linger in the age of stone.
The world would sleep if things were run
By men who say, "It can't be done."

VIDEO ASSIGNMENT

Hey guys! It's me, Marilee! This week we're going to be learning how to do two different video edits. First, a simple video transition and second, how to do smooth edits from short clips to make a storytelling video.

For your homework you're just going to follow the steps below and bring your tablet to class with you. It needs to have CapCut downloaded AND all your video clips already on your device. Here are your instructions:

1. Download CapCut to your device

First, we're going to do a jumping transition video.

Here is an example:

*You get the idea, you'll start out wearing a certain type of clothing -- maybe it's your pj's and messy hair like the little girls, or maybe you'll just not look ready for the day. Be as creative as you want.

*Choose a spot that you can stand in (you'll need to stand in the exact spot later so make sure you can remember exactly where you stood). Set up your camera in a spot where you can film yourself. The camera will also need to stay in the exact spot so keep that in mind.

*Record yourself in your "messy clothes" -- move around, make faces, dance like a crazy person, don't just stand there. After moving around for a bit jump in place. End the video. Don't worry about the fact that you're recording extra stuff (like you walking up to the camera to stop the video), that will be edited out later. :D

*Now you're going to change into what you want to wear. Do you want to dress up in your favorite outfit? Wear tons of accessories? Put on a halloween costume, a sports uniform, a fancy dress ... whatever you want! Once you are changed stand in the exact same spot and start with a JUMP and then keep moving, dancing, moving, waving, whatever you want. Then stop the video!

*Bring those TWO clips AND Capcut downloaded onto your device to class. I'll teach you how to add music, special effects and edit it together to make a smooth transition.

THINGS to keep in mind: Getting your camera in a steady spot with a good angle. You can't move the camera and you don't want it to fall over. Also, think of lighting. If you do it outside the light can change, if you do it inside you can control the light a little more.

Second, a short storytelling video.

Here are three examples -- you can see how even though they are all telling a very different story they are all made up of short moving clips to tell a story.

For this next assignment we're going to do a video all about YOU. This is more like a mini vlog than all about transitions. You are going to be taking 10 video clips, no more than 10 seconds each (we'll be editing them shorter). You could be baking something and you'll take a few video clips of the whole process. You could be making a craft and take some clips of the process from beginning to end. You could even just take 10 different clips of your house -- your room, you and your siblings, your favorite books, just stuff that's all about you. **As you take these clips include movement. Pan your camera along your bookshelf, or start up high and move closer to the recipe you are making. Movement will be much more interesting than still clips.
Once you have 10 short videos that tell a story bring them to class and I'll teach you how to stitch them together and add music to make a fun little vlog all about you.

That's it! Text my mom if you have questions! :D

Imaginative Arts:

This week we are making flip book animations. Sister Fontano gave you supplies last week. I will attach a few videos to watch about animation and flip books. Have fun with it this week. You should have enough sheets to create a couple seconds worth of animation. Typical movies - both live action and animated - are filmed and shown at 24 frames per second. This means that every second of a movie you see 24 different still images. For a live action movie the camera takes 24 photographs in a second. Those images don't actually move, but when we view them quickly- 24 of them each second- our brain recognizes the difference between the pictures as movement. This is why we call them "Motion Pictures" or  "MOVIES" - because they look like they are "MOVING". For an animated movie the pictures are drawn and photographed instead of photographing live actors. This means that an animated movie like The Princess and The Frog from 2009 (Disney's last hand drawn animated film)  which was 93 minutes long- is made up of over 133,920 drawings.  So if you draw 50 pictures for your flip book it will be just a few seconds worth of a story.

With that in mind we aren't trying to tell a huge story. You don't have that much time. For your flip book consider making a ball move around the page, or a stick fall over or a face blink and smile- something simple. Small adjustments will make your drawings "move" slowly. Big adjustments will make them "move" faster.

 You will see in the videos linked below that the artist uses a light board to help him see his previous drawings underneath the page he is drawing on. If you don't have a light board you can try drawing on a window on a sunny day. Notecards might be hard to see through. If you can't see through them it's okay, do your best and have fun with it.
