Read at home: Finish Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. We will pay Vanbucks for "Mom approved" books you start and finish after you have finished Summer of the Monkeys. What are some of the challenges Jay Berry faced in catching the monkeys? What did he do? Who helped and encouraged him? Do you have people like that in your life? Could you be that for someone else?
Writing: Learn what a verb, noun, adjective and adverb are. Make a list of 10 examples of each. Also, see bonus assignment at the bottom of this blog post.
Poetry: Recite all of the poems learned so far. 1 week until the Poetry Bee. Finish memorizing "Don't Quit."
Don’t Quit
John Greenleaf Whittier
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow-
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out-
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit”
Imaginative Arts:
Memorize Don't Quit. Does it remind you of any experiences in your life?
Watch the movie Akeelah and the Bee (currently streaming on BYUtv for free). Look for obstacles that Akeelah has to overcome. What are her challenges? Who helps her? Who tries to hold her back? What does she do to overcome discouragement? What do you learn from her and from other characters?
Think of challenges that you are facing now. What would help you better overcome?
Ask several older family members about challenges they have had to overcome and how they have done it. What skills have they developed or things have they learned? Ask what inspires them to keep trying. Think of scripture heroes. What helped them? Write down or draw some ideas of things that could help you.
Create something visual that can be a reminder to keep trying when things get hard. This could be anything! Some ideas include a collage of uplifting pictures, power words, sayings. It could be a photograph of something inspiring. It could be a painting or clay sculpture. Anything! If possible, bring your creation, or a picture of it, to share with us.
**Bonus Vanguard cash if you write a journal entry or story about a personal experience of doing something hard.**
