I walked a mile with sorrow

and not a word said she,

but oh, the things I learned from her

when sorrow walked with me.

Writing: Write a journal entry about your experiences this year with Vanguard Junior. What has been your favorite activity, topic or field trip? What have you learned? How have you changed? Please bring it to show us.

Song: Finish learning "Battle Hymn of the Republic"

1. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.

He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible, swift sword;

His truth is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

2. I have seen Him in the watchfires

Of a hundred circling camps

They have builded Him an altar

In the evening dews and damps;

I can read His righteous sentence

By the dim and flaring lamps;

His day is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

3. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;

He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat.

Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer him; be jubilant my feet!

Our God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

4. In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,

With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me.

As he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free,

While God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!

His truth is marching on.

The Sun-dial at Well's College
by Henry Van Dyke

The shadow by my finger cast
Divides the future from the past:
Before it, sleeps the unborn hour
In darkness, and beyond thy power:
Behind its unreturning line,
The vanished hour, no longer thine:
One hour alone is in thy hands,—
The NOW on which the shadow stands.

Poem: Finish memorizing Little Miss Muffet

The Embarrassing Episode of Little Miss Muffet

by Guy Wetmore Carryl (1873-1904)

Little Miss Muffet discovered a tuffet,
    (Which never occurred to the rest of us)
And, as ’twas a June day, and just about noonday,
    She wanted to eat -- like the best of us:
Her diet was whey, and I hasten to say
    It is wholesome and people grow fat on it.
The spot being lonely, the lady not only
    Discovered the tuffet, but sat on it.

A rivulet gabbled beside her and babbled,
    As rivulets always are thought to do,
And dragon flies sported around and cavorted,
    As poets say dragon flies ought to do;
When, glancing aside for a moment, she spied
    A horrible sight that brought fear to her,
A hideous spider was sitting beside her,
    And most unavoidably near to her!

Albeit unsightly, this creature politely
    Said, “Madam, I earnestly vow to you,
I’m penitent that I did not bring my hat. I
    Should otherwise certainly bow to you.”
Though anxious to please, he was so ill at ease
    That he lost all sense of propriety,
And grew so inept that he clumsily stept
    In her plate -- which is barred in Society.

This curious error completed her terror;
    She shuddered, and growing much paler, not
Only left tuffet, but dealt him a buffet
    Which doubled him up in a sailor knot.
It should be explained that at this he was pained;
    He cried, “I have vexed you, no doubt of it!
Your fist’s like a truncheon.”  “You’re still in my luncheon,”
    Was all that she answered. “Get out of it!”

And THE MORAL is this: Be it madam or miss
    To whom you have something to say,
You are only absurd when you get in the curd
    But you’re rude when you get in the whey!

Writing: In Little Britches, Ralph shares several lessons he learned from his father. Nephi also talks about being "born of goodly parents" and being "taught somewhat in all the learning of [his] father."   What are some of the experiences you have had with a parent that have taught you important lessons? Write one of these in your journal. What principles do you think it will be important to teach to your children?

Scripture: Memorize John 6:35 "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."

Song: Learn the first verse to hymn #30, "Come, Come Ye Saints."

Multiplication: Work on your 4 times tables 0-12

Unit project: Finish up your project and be ready to show it off.  Even if it did not turn out exactly how you wanted it to- that's okay!  Also, get your outfit ready!  Please come appropriately dressed for our Pioneer/ Western party.

****On April 17, you will have an opportunity to display
one of your projects from this year.
Which would you like to use?
There is time to do one more project before this date.****
