November Eureka

                                                                 November Eureka

1. Pull out the ancient calculating device.

Beginner Abacus Students:

Continue practicing by filling out worksheet #2 from this PDF File.  It's good practice!

To learn the next step in adding, watch this video with your abacus in hand, and work the problems with her.

2. N2K...If you need to remember the game, rewatch National Number Knockout. Watch the Rules Here.  Spend at least 10 minutes playing this with a sibling or parent.  We will still just be doing practice games using adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.  Practice, Practice, Practice!

3.  Learn THREE things about ONE of these people.  Come prepared to share what you learned!
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

Zacharias Janssen 1595

Rene Descartes 1596-1650

Pierre De Fermat 1601-1685

Become/Serve

Ask a grandparent, or anyone from their generation, how math and/or logic have been useful during their lives.  NOT if they like it or not, but how it's helped them, or impacted them in some way.  Write down 3 ways in your commonplace book.

If you want to try this Krypto with your older siblings, you will be awesome!  If you don't want to try it, you will still be awesome, but you should try!

1,3,4,7,8
Your Target number is....71

Rules: Using each of the 5 numbers ONLY ONCE, you may use any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division to manipulate the 5 numbers in any order to reach the target number.

Example: if you had the 5 numbers: "8,4,1,6,3", you could reach the target number of 11 by doing: 3 x 4 + 1 - (8 - 6)

There is always a way, usually more than 1, to reach the target number.

Use your commonplace book to record your trial and error. Record your equation and bring it to class!

Don't forget to be reading "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" with your family!

History

                                                                              History

"Light of Christ"
The Reformation

Study/Learn

1. Read in "The Story of the World: Vol. 2" Ch. 34(only about Martin Luther), 35, (only about Gutenberg's Great Invention and making paper) and 36 (only the part about the spread of the reformation.)

2- Take notes on the chapters in your commonplace book.  I want you to write at least one thing about each section that you read.

Become/Serve

Elder Robert D. Hales said this of the scriptures:

"As with voices from the dust, the prophets of the Lord cry out to us on earth today: take hold of the scriptures! Cling to them, walk by them, live by them, rejoice in them, feast on them. Don’t nibble. They are “the power of God unto salvation” that lead us back to our Savior Jesus Christ."

How important are the scriptures to you?  How often do you use them?  Are they sitting on your shelf gathering dust?

Find 2 quotes from leaders of the church about the scriptures.  How often should we be reading in them?  Why?

Set a goal to do better.  If you are reading every week, set a goal to read every day.  If you are already reading every day, set a goal to read just a little bit more.  Write this goal in your journal and journal on what you expect to get from a commitment to spend more time in the scriptures.
