Go to the library and get 10 books about central or South America,  Look at the books and come prepared to share some of the cool things you have learned. You will earn Vanguard money for interesting facts.

Read "You wouldn't want to be an Aztec Sacrifice" or "You wouldn't want to be a Mayan Soothsayer." 

Watch episodes 3,4, 7, 8, 15, 16 on Amazon Prime - Kids Animated History Kids-Animated-History (You don't have to watch ALL of them, but Vanguard Cash if you do!!)

Choose any country to learn about in more detail and present to us. You can work on the same country as your siblings, or you can choose a different country. You will have 1-2 minutes to tell us all about your country. You can present it as a report, or do a slideshow, or make a poster, or draw pictures, or do anything you like to make it how you like it.

You could include things like:                                                            

• The country's capital
• Picture of the flag
• When did they become a country?
• The country motto
• The country nickname
• An interesting fact
• A famous landmark
• What is the climate?
• What kind of weather do they have?
• What do they grow?
• Show us where it is on a map
• Someone famous that lived there or still lives there.

If you want to do a little more, you can bring something to share like a portion of food from that country, or some display items if you know someone that has been there or something the country is known for doing like making clothes or plastic or anything else you can think of.

You will earn Vanguard money for being prepared!

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done

      But he with a chuckle replied

That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one

      Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin

      On his face. If he worried he hid it.

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

      That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

 

 

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;

      At least no one ever has done it;”

But he took off his coat and he took off his hat

      And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,

      Without any doubting or quiddit,

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

      That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

 

 

There are thousands to tell you 

it cannot be done,

      There are thousands to prophesy failure,

There are thousands to point out to you 

one by one,

      The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

      Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing

      That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

 

Writing: Write a note of appreciation to someone who is a good example to you. Share what you admire or have learned from that person. This could be a sibling, friend, parent, neighbor, relative, etc. Hand deliver or mail the note.

Writing: Write a thank you note to a teacher who has touched your life. Examples include a piano or music teacher, a primary teacher, or other adult (not in your family) who has touched your life. Include details about why you appreciate the person. Mail, or, if possible, hand deliver the note to the person. 

History: In reading Listening for Lions, we have encountered (and will continue to encounter) several animal species and topic specific to the time and location of this story. Pick a topic from this list to learn more about and share with the class. If you'd like to do more than one, please do! (Maybe pick one at a time? When you have learned what you want about it, go back and choose another. If you are having a hard time finding information on the one you selected, you can trade for another one that hasn't yet been spoken for.) Have fun! Include any information or visual aids that you find interesting.

If You Were Busy Being Kind

If you were busy being kind,

Before you knew it you would find

You’d soon forget to think ’twas true

That someone was unkind to you.

 

If you were busy being glad

And cheering people who seem sad,

Although your heart might ache a bit,

You’d soon forget to notice it.

 

If you were busy being good,

And doing just the best you could,

You’d not have time to blame some man

Who’s doing just the best he can.

 

If you were busy being true

To what you know you ought to do,

You’d be so busy you’d forget

The blunders of the folks you’ve met.

Writing: In your notebook or journal, write about three things you did or that happened during the Christmas break. You could write about a fun family tradition, how the holidays were different this year, a favorite food that you enjoyed, something nice someone did for you, etc. Come prepared to share a happy highlight!  

Imaginative arts: Get creative in the kitchen! Make a recipe this week and, if it's reasonable, bring some of what you made to share. What foods do you like? What do you usually buy that maybe you could try making at home? (For example, I'm wanting to try to make my own English muffins. Never thought of trying that at home! I just always buy them.) Be sure to clean up after yourself! If you love how it turned out, email me the recipe and we'll share it (or bring a copy for each family).
